Process for extracting squalene from amaranth

Historically, squalene was extracted from shark liver oil.
Today, when squalene is of marine origin, it is used in the pharmaceutical sector.
In other applications, squalene of plant origin is preferred, as it reflects a strong trend towards the development of plant-derived cosmetics. Today, olives are the main plant source for extracting squalene. However, the highest concentration of squalene in the plant kingdom is found in the oil extracted from amaranth seeds.

Competitive advantages

  • Green extraction
  • Squalene obtained in greater quantities (35 times more) from amaranth than from olive trees
  • Growing amaranth allows rotations to be broken => agronomic value
  • Environmental impact: low carbon footprint of amaranth cultivation, produced and processed in a short cycle

Applications

  • Cosmetics
  • Nutraceuticals
  • Vaccine adjuvant
